Candela

Candela was one segment of an immersive art experience curated by Jonah Levy entitled Dark Before Dawn. Participants were invited to weave their way through a vacant tenement building in Ridgewood, Queens, engaging in projects evoking both darkness and light. Candela took place in two rooms, set to appear as the aftermath of a party complete with streamers, balloons, dripping paint, and patch-worked fabric cushions. A performer in the first room read aloud real-life breakup letters to the crowd. In the second room, swathed in dripping warm light, a second reader read love letters aloud.

Designed to feel like a surreal dream and a trip inside the psyche, Candela is about love, loss, and what we carry with us. Performances by Jeremy Friedman and Heather Morowitz. Musical soundtrack by DJ Ninsopolis. Lighting design by Shalin Scupham. April 2017.
